FLATCUT_ is a fabrication studio with a design sensibility. We believe that the realization of great ideas comes when there is a consistency, fluidity and transparency at every stage of the design process. We are committed to expanding the creative horizons of designers and architects, exposing them to working models that transcend the traditional, and introducing them to new computational and material capabilities. While we maintain a comprehensive machine shop with state of the art technology and can operate in the traditional sense of "fabricator," we are excited to be at the forefront of a new design era that integrates the cerebral, creative and material processes. Our design studio in DUMBO, Brooklyn in conjunction with our 100,000 square foot fabrication house in Passaic, NJ is dedicated to pushing the limits of architecture and design through machinery.
THE STUDIO_ Located in DUMBO, Brooklyn our design studio is home to both collaboration and invention, FLATCUT_ is both a fabricator and design house. From inception of an idea to execution of finished product, we combine the skills and capabilities of a master builder with the creativity of an artist. Our in-house architects, designers and engineers work closely with clients to turn even the most far-reaching ideas into reality. As fabricators we utilize cutting edge technology and software to inject poetry into digital architecture and design. As inventors we create our own product design, furniture and architecture. We aim to transcend the boundary of what minds and machines can create, and are inspired by the beauty of their intersection.
THE FABRICATION FACILITY_ Our 100,000 square foot facility in Passaic, NJ is a one-of-a-kind machine shop in the tri-state area. With over 100 machines—including a CNC Trumph and robotic MIG welders— we are a one-stop shop for architects, artists and builders. While we maintain an international clientele, we are also a logical solution for New York-based architects. The facility can cut, form and finish any work, taking projects from design and engineering through anodizing and powder coating. In addition to common metals such as steel and aluminum, we work with a wide variety of materials, including wood, composites, and various alloys like bronze and titanium. With a focus on unified inventive design and functional performance, our priority is to integrate the services of designer and builder from concept to completion with an unparalleled attention to detail.

Tomer Ben-Gal: Principal/ Founder
Tomer Ben-Gal is a designer and creative inventor focused on translating the essence of ideas into physical form. He founded the fabrication firm FLATCUT_ in response to the void in the marketplace for a company that could understand the creative process of architects, designers and artists, and collaborate with them as opposed to working for them. Together with his clients, he has explored the theoretical possibilities of the second, third and fourth dimensions to bring the beauty and philosophy of geometry into the built-form. He views his vast army of machinery as large-format printers that, when given the precise combination of information and material, print in 3-D on a gargantuan scale. He has worked with prominent minds in the creative field to create site-specific feature pieces for museums, celebrities, and private residences. In addition to one-off pieces, his firm's production and fabrication capabilities range from mass-producing 20,000 custom pieces to completing 50,000 square foot interiors and facades.
Jay D. Schainholz: Principal
Jay D. Schainholz has led both a specialized medical device manufacturing company and a precision metal fabrication company, since 1991 . Before entering the world of fabrication, he served as a tax associate for two years at a New York City-based law firm specializing in tax-driven financing. Schainholz earned his J.D. from Columbia University School of Law, where he served as editor of the Columbia Law Review, his M.B.A. with specializations in Finance and Business Economics from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, and his B.A. in Economics from Columbia College. He ran unsuccessfully for the New Jersey State Senate in 2003, and is the holder of several US and international patents.
Daniel Ramirez: Director of Rearch and Development / Operations
Daniel Ramirez trained in architecture and design, embraces parametric modeling techniques to initiate organic forms and enhance traditional methods of design documentation. With the belief that collaboration pushes design into new territories, he encourages and explores the uninhibited exchange of information between designers and fabricators made possible through the dissemination of digital tools. He received a B.A. in Architecture from Columbia University and an M. Arch. from Pratt Institute. Prior to joining FLATCUT_, Daniel worked for several design firms focusing on the implementation of digital design into concept and construction processes.
Alexandra Polier: Communication Consultant
Alexandra Polier is a public relations and social media strategist with more than 10 years experience working across such industries as architecture, design, art, technology, fashion and philanthropy. Having earned a masters degree in Journalism from Columbia University, and traveled the world as a former correspondent, she has the ability to recognize true innovation and ingenuity and translate that into successful brand-building media campaigns.
